EQUAL RIGHTS AMENDMENT
Louisiana is one of only 15 states that has not yet adopted the Equal Rights Amendment, written by Alice Paul in 1923. The ERA reads:
Section 1. Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.
Section 2. The Congress shall have the power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article.
Section 3. This amendment shall take effect two years after the date of ratification.
This short, simple amendment could have a powerful impact on Louisiana women! In the upcoming months, BPW/LA will be working toward gaining the support of our elected officials for the ratification of the ERA.
